Is St Albans A Nice Place To Live?

St Albans is a nice place to live in Hertfordshire, England, nestled between Hemel Hempstead and Hatfield. It sits just 20 miles northwest of London, making it an accessible retreat from the bustling city life. This cathedral city has a rich history, tracing back to Roman times when it was known as Verulamium. The name "St Albans" pays homage to the first British saint, Alban, who lived during the 3rd or 4th century. Legend has it that he sheltered a Christian priest, ultimately sacrificing his life for his newfound faith. Over time, the city grew, becoming a significant Roman settlement with a forum, basilica, and theatre, remnants of which can still be seen today.

St Albans' history is woven with tales of Anglo-Saxon and medieval life. Following the Roman occupation, it became a focal point for the Anglo-Saxon Waeclingas tribe. The Benedictine Abbey of St Albans, founded in 793, added to the city's allure, serving as a place of worship and education. The town flourished in the medieval period, becoming a bustling market town and home to the esteemed St Albans School. The Wars of the Roses left their mark on the city, with two battles fought nearby. As time marched on, St Albans transitioned into the modern era, embracing industrialization and welcoming the railway in 1858. Today, it stands as a vibrant tourist destination, blending its storied past with contemporary charm.
